The Land Before Time: Cavs Pre-Game Thoughts

May 13, 2025 vs Indiana (Game 5)

"Things turn out best for the people who make the best of the way things turn out." – John Wooden

Goodbye, narratives. Goodbye, analysis. Goodbye, future.

We have reached that point in a season where there is literally only one thing that matters: winning. Adjustments can still be made. Narratives can still be changed. But none of that really matters if it doesn’t lead to a win. Otherwise, it’s all over.

Nearly every season in professional athletics reaches this point. It’s a moment that must be met with a distinct lack of nerves and a distinct form of determination. Play all the beautiful, or even ethical, basketball you want, if it doesn’t produce a win, it isn’t worth it.

This is usually where I would try to insert a few things to look for in tonight’s game. I might even throw in some stats that highlight a recent trend in the Cavs’ play. Not tonight, however. Tonight, I care about one thing only: winning the game.

Perhaps this simplicity is because I am still not sure how the Cavs’ ended up in this position. The whiplash of the first four games of this series has been harsh. This is especially true for Games 3 and 4. After dominating the Pacers in Game 3 with all players suiting up, the same team did the exact opposite in Game 4. They got dominated in a way that is rarely seen at this level of basketball. What will tonight bring? I can honestly say that I have no clue…

Just win, Cavs.
